Nikolay Kostylev reinvigorated the stagnant lightweight division in the mid 1950s by his repeated world record snatches and his high totals. His speed and power left a vivid impression on those who were lucky enough to see him in action. In 1955 he won the World Championship while setting another snatch record, although he was very slightly overwight. Unable to compete in the Melbourne Olympics the following year, he continued to lift at a very high level well into the 1960s as a middleweight.
