Pete, I met your brother, Jim at the Old Time Strongman event in N.J., a few years ago. I asked him if he was the 'world's strongest dentist'. He thought for a few moments and replied he probably was but then quickly added, 'My brother was the better weightlifter.' A nice compliment.

My father, Frank Spellman and Pete were teammates on the 1948 Olympic team in London. Dad told the story that he and Pete we at the hotel before their competition that day. Dad took a nap and Pete was writing a letter. Dad awoke and asked Pete what time it was? They only had 15 minutes to get to the weigh in for the competition. They had missed the bus to the venue. They jumped in a cab and made it with only minutes to spare! Dad won the gold and Pete won the silver. A great day!

Yes, I guess Rapahel Chimishkian was the first Armenian Olympic gold medalist. And since he was from Georgia, he preceded Paul Anderson in that category....I'm also curious about whether Pete George ever attended St. Thomas Eastern Orthodox Church in Fairlawn, Ohio, where I saw Bulgarian President Zhelyu Zhelev in 1992.

Victor, Our father’s name was Tryan Taleff. It was changed to Tony George after arriving in the USA.

Victor, it's a good question... From the interview with Peter George, Bulgarian was the first language he spoke when he was a kid. He was fluent in Bulgarian, spoke and read Bulgarian papers... You're right about Nurikyan being from an Armenian family in Plovdiv. But, he the first Bulgarian but wasn't the first Armenian to win the Olympics in weightlifting :-)

In the caption to the colorized picture elsewhere on this website, it is mentioned that the George brothers are from a Bulgarian family. Does anyone know what their original family name was? And by the way, if Pete George counts as the first Bulgarian Olympic champion, should Norair Nurikyan count as an Armenian Olympic champion?

My dad Henry Freshwater used to train with Pete at Larry Barnholths garage gym. He always spoke highly of Pete.

Childhood friend and class mate at Robinson elementary school and East Hi. We lived on Robert street and are 3 monfh apart..His older brother George was a pain until they moved. Every kid in our neighborhood bragged that we knew him when left for London. We didn't think that when he and his best friend Mike started body building. Pete was small like me. Hi Petr!
