:: 12/18/2014: Dominique, Quebec City Quebec, CanadaI am not surprised J.Davis wasn't favoring the deadlift, because every time I train DL, I am always slower when cleaning weights a few days afterward. I now use the DL sparingly and spend most of my time doing cleans, high pulls and heavy bag lifting (I train Strongman). J.Davis is a real guiding light to me.
:: 7/30/2012: Mike Catuosco, Syosset NY, USAI worked with John Davis for 15 years on Rikers Island. He was a very private person. Once you got to know him and if you were sincere he would open up to you and talk about anything. He was well respected . As Co,s we had to work together. I was a CO. He worked the night shift with me. He loved to eat scrambled eggs with onions.
:: 3/29/2010: A. Troia, Pacific Grove CA, USAMy Uncle Frank spent a lot of time with John Davis in Brooklyn, back in the 1930s. Frank was a tough Italian kid who at first didn't like Davis because of racial animosity (it was the 30s, remember), but they soon became good friends. Davis was always astounding his buddies with amazing feats of strength. My uncle said that on a few occasions Davis would be confronted by some big racist bully or other and, while Davis tried to be peaceful, he was nevertheless forced to show the bully 'just who was boss.' Almost to Frank's dying day in 2007, he would talk about having been friends with the strongest man in the world. That sort of talk about Davis inspired me to become a competitive weightlifter during my teens and twenties.

:: 12/23/2009: Avon J. Bellamy, Baltimore MD, USAI saw a newsreel of him lifting locomotive wheels when I was a little boy. They showed him actually lifting the wheels and throwing them up high enough to shift his hands under the axle to make the lift. That was amazing!
