Leonid Taranenko, USSR/Belarus

Leonid Taranenko (b. 1956) is the athlete who lifted the heaviest weight of the 20th century. It happened in Canberra, Australia in 1988 and his clean and jerk of 266 kg set up a record challenge for decades to follow. The footage features his golden clean and jerk of 240 kilos at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and the ground-breaking world record (265.5 kilos) set at the 1987 World Championship in Ostrava... More.
