Sergey Korotkov was one of the most popular hockey personalities among the fans of the Spartak Moscow. He wasn't a big defenseman, but he compensated his lack of size with a very fast and mobile style. Formerly a forward, Korotkov developed into one of the top offensive blueliners in the Russian Elite League. In his own zone, he was known for a tough and fearless style. In addition, his dedication and loyalty to his team made him very popular among the fans.

Korotkov began to play in a grassroot neighborhood hockey team in 1963. In 1964, he was invited to play for the Spartak youth team and since then he stayed with this team (except of the Season 1978-79 when he played for the Krylya Sovetov Moscow.)

Despite of his popularity, Korotkov had a very limited exposure to the national team. He played at the World Championship 1976 which was rather disappointing for the Team USSR. They lost the opening game to Poland by 4-6 and left the tournament without the expected set of gold medals.

Korotkov was selected as a candidate for the Team USSR 1974, but didn't play in the Summit.

After retirement from hockey, he became a highly successful youth coach. In 1997, at the age of 46, Sergey Korotkov deceased.
