Sergei Kotov was a prominent Soviet elite league winger of the 1970s. As a forward of the Krylya Sovetov organization in Moscow, Kotov marked his sound offensive style with 177 goals in 446 career games.
Kotov began to play hockey in his hometown Kazan, Tatarstan, USSR. In 1968-1971, he played for various Red Army Clubs in the minors. In 1971, 20-year old Kotov was transferred to play for the legendary CSKA in Moscow. Young Kotov played only in one game and didn't qualify for the gold of the USSR championship. However, he really impressed Boris Kulagin, who after a long CSKA apprenticeship under the ""father of Russian hockey"" Anatoly Tarasov, left the Red Army system to build his own team. Kotov, as a part of promising CSKA players, joined Kulagin's Krylya Sovetov in 1972.
Sergey Kotov played solid 11 seasons for the Krylya Sovetov in 1972-1983. He won a USSR Cup 1974, USSR Gold 1974 and the European Champions Cup in 1977. Although Kotov's exposure to the national team was rather limited, he was selected as a candidate to play for Team USSR in the 1974 Summit Series. Sergey played in 5 games. In the later seasons, Kotov played for the Soviet Wings/Krylya Sovetov in the Superseries vs. top NHL clubs in 1975-76 (0G+3A in 4 games) and in 1978-79 (3 games).
After his retirement from hockey in 1984, Kotov became a coach in the Krylya Sovetov organization. He received the Merited Coach of Russia (ZTR Russia) Award for his outstanding successes in coaching.
