One of the most gifted Russian elite players of all time, Sergey Kapustin was a part of Team USSR in many top international tournaments of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Fast skating, great puckhandling skills, mastery of hockey improvization and obvious scoring talent of an 18-year old native of a small town Ukhta quickly brought him to play hockey in Moscow. In addition to obvious technical skills, young prospect loved to play physical hockey. In 1971, he was selected to play for Boris Kulagin in the Krylya Sovetov. In 1974, this young and promising hungry team won the national championship. In the same year, after Kulagin's appointment as a head coach of Team USSR, Kapustin began to play for the national team.

Being a natural team player, Kapustin played with various world class players throughout his career. In 1977, Kapustin was transfered to the mighty CSKA to play LW on a very interesting Team USSR and Red Army line with Helmut Balderis, RW and Victor Zhluktov, C. Fans of one of the most popular Russian club obviously remember the top notch Shalimov-Shepelev-Kapustin line of the early 1980s.

At the 1974 Summit Series, Sergey Kapustin was a 21-year old rookie of the national team. He played in 5 games and earned 1 point with 3 penalties. Playing against such hockey legends as Bobby Hull, J.C. Tremblay and Gordie Howe was obviously an unforgettable experience for him. He learned his lessons. In the following decade, Kapustin won 7 world titles, Olympics'76, Canada Cup'81 and played in the major world competitions up to his retirement in 1986.

Sergey Kapustin died in 1997. He was only 44...
