Like Dennis Sobchuk, Ron Chipperfield was a product of the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League, and the object of a bidding war between the NHL and WHA when his junior career ended. The WHA Vancouver Blazers outbid the NHL California Golden Seals for Chipperfield in the summer of 1974.
Ron would go on to have a solid if unspectacular career in the WHA. He struggled in his first season of 1974-75, but bounced back with a 42- goal year in 1975-76. Chipperfield was limited by less than blazing speed and average defensive skills but had a good shot and was a superb playmaker. For the rest of his WHA career he would average over 30 goals and 50 assists per season. He joined the NHL as the captain of the Edmonton Oilers in 1979-80 and retired during the 1980-81 season.
Ron Chipperfield was another of the junior stars Billy Harris allowed to work out with Team Canada. Like Dennis Sobchuk Ron looked very sharp in training camp leading many to question the
decision not to put him on the actual "game roster".
