Serge broke into the NHL full-time with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1970-71. In his rookie season he scored a very respectable 23 goals along with 28 assists. Midway through the following season he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. During the 1972-73 season Serge made hockey headlines with a spectacular 5- goal game.
In the summer of 1973 Serge accepted an offer from the WHA Quebec Nordiques. It was in Quebec where Serge truly blossomed. He became a top front line center helping the Nordiques reach the 1975 Avco World Trophy finals and to a WHA championship in 1976-77. Playing on a line with Marc Tardif and Real Cloutier Serge and his teammates terrorized WHA goalies for over 5 years. Serge retired after the 1980-81 season.
Serge Bernier was one of the players who played in every game of the 1974 Summit. He found it to be a very frustrating experience. Playing mainly on a line with Marc Tardif and Rejean Houle (known as the French Selection) Serge had 1 goal and 2 assists. He played much better than his statistics indicated however. The "French Selection" line was constantly "buzzing around" the Soviet net, however had little success actually scoring. Serge and his line-mates were "bedeviled" by tremendous goaltending from Vladislav Tretiak, and a bizarre series of hit
goalposts and crossbars. That being said Serge did show he had the ability to play at the highest level of the game.
