Valery Kharlamov
Team USSR # 17
Valery Kharlamov is a legend of Soviet hockey. He was an idol of several generations of Soviet players and fans. There were no people in Russia not fascinated with his magnificent hockey style. He was definitely one of the most talented players in the history of the game. Despite a relatively small size even by hockey standards of the 1970's, Kharlamov was an author of unforgettable 1-on-1 moves that left the best defense players in the world wondering how he managed to outsmart them. He had simply amazing skating and stick handling skills. But, he wasn't just a fast skater. He was able to constantly change the gears of his skating speed depending on his on-ice maneuvers. Being very creative and unpredictable on ice, Kharlamov was one of the major attractions to the game when he played hockey.

PERFORMANCE IN THE 1972 SUMMIT
"All of us were impressed, but none of us wanted to let on. I've seldom seen anyone come down on two NHL defencemen and beat them to the outside, go around them and then in on the net. It just isn't done." Harry Sinden, Team Canada Head Coach
